CATGUT TRIO CONCERT - May 4, 2009 - 7:30 p.m. (click for more info)
The Catgut Trio presents the fifth concert of its series, "Catgut Monday", on May 4, 2009 at 7:30pm. The program will feature Danish composer Carl Reinecke's String Trio in C Minor. Reinecke was a virtuoso pianist, first-rate violinist, conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and the teacher of such luminaries as Edvard Grieg, Leos Janacek, Isaac Albeniz, and Max Bruch. He was also a famous composer in his time, and his beautiful string trio, with its romantic themes and clear writing, gives ample evidence as to why.
The trio will also be premiering "The Wooden Bridge on the Ider River", a lovely work by Oscar nominated Spanish composer Javier Navarrete. Navarrete, who studied composition under Gabriel Brncic, participated in the avant-garde scene of Barcelona in the seventies with works for instrumental ensembles and dance and theater groups. In 1980 he joined fellow Spanish composer Alberto Iglesias to form a duo devoted to performing their compositions on electronic keyboards. In 1986 he composed his first score for the cult film Tras el Cristal (Agustin Villaronga), and since then he has devoted most of his energy to film music. He attracted international attention, and an Oscar nomination, with his score for Pan's Labyrinth (Guillermo del Toro). Navarrete moved to L.A. in 2008, and the musical and artistic excitement of the city has moved him to write some concert music. He writes, "The string trio ‘The Wooden Bridge on the Ider River’ is less a depiction of a beautiful Mongolian landscape than a meditation on human craft and skill and its frequent anonymity, isolation, and fragility. The work is lovingly dedicated to The Catgut Trio."
To participate in honoring the 200th anniversary of the passing of Haydn, the trio will perform Haydn's two-movement String Trio in D major, originally a late Sonata for solo piano. This concert will also include the works of two Czech composers: Antonin Dvorak and Zdenek Fibich. Dvorak's Miniatures and Gavota consists of 5 brief pieces of different character, while Fibich's Poeme (My Moonlight Madonna) is famous for its heartbreaking melody. As always, there will be light refreshments during the intermission.
